Top 10 Tips

Here are 10 top tips to make the most of caravan camping in Australia

So you're planning your first trip in your new caravan and really excited about it. What could be better?  Well there are a few tips that can help you along your way which have been found tried and true by seasoned travelers and should ensure that you have the best trip possible.

1.     Be Prepared!  Yes, that old scouts saying is so true!  Make a list of all the items you'll need, well before you leave.  Essential caravanning items like: a fire extinguisher, wheel chocks, caravan jack, sway control device, towing mirrors, extra coolant and oil, a spare fan belt and insulation tape. You'll find some more information on suggested must-haves at 'A Big Peachey Adventure website

2.      Make sure your van is safe and secure:   It's very important to make a check list of all the necessary  safety checks and keep it in your van to refer to each time you pack up and leave a spot.  Necessary checks such as:  ensuring the van is fitted correctly, drawers and other loose items are secure, windows and doors are locked, rear lights are working, remove wheel chocks and jockey wheel, raise the caravan steps and all tyres are inflated correctly.

3.      Take it slow!  Towing a caravan takes some getting used to and you need to take extra care.  Travelling at high speed also drains your vehicle's fuel and can be tricky in high winds so watch your speed and be mindful of other drivers and let them pass where possible.

4.      Plan your departure time!  The early bird catches the worm so always intend to leave as early as possible where you'll miss the main traffic and feel more confident driving with less traffic on the roads.

5.      Privacy is not always possible.   Unless you are camped somewhere in the bush or near the beach in a secluded spot you are not likely to have much privacy.  In a caravan park you're more often than not surrounded by neighbours, beside and behind you with thin walls so expect to hear voices, TV's, children and even snoring!

6.      Work together as a team.  Parking your caravan requires precision reversing most of the time so be sure you and your partner communicate and practice these manouvres.  Stay calm and patient, use your mirrors and don't panic!  Once you're parked, have a set-up routine. Again practice makes perfect but a good quick set up routine makes things so much more nicer.  The sooner you set up, the sooner you can sit, relax with a cuppa or a glass of wine.

7.       The toilets stink in the mornings.  Be prepared while in some caravan parks of the aromas in the toilets first thing in the mornings especially if the park is full of travellers.  Communal showering and toileting has its drawbacks.

8.       The washing lines are always full.   Invariably if the parks are crowded, the washing lines are often full.  A foldaway portable clothes line is a must when camping.

9.      You'll get on each other's nerves!   Being together in a confined space 24/7 is going to test your relationship. Try to work out some 'me' time on your trip and be patient.

10.    It will be one of the best times of your life!    If you take care, be patient, expect that maybe things may not always go right and take it easy, this will be one of the best things you'll ever do.  Stop and smell the roses, look around you at the beautiful country and appreciate it.  Enjoy.
